Modular barge - catamaran version

Modular catamaran barge

We have developed a new modular barge that is very cost effective and offers a high payload:

The effective payload – centrally placed – per 10m pontoon with 300mm freeboard  is 6.8 Te. This gives just above 20Te for the trimaran version!

This barge is about 35 % cheaper than what a similar barge from our Northern European competitor would cost you and you get more payload!

Yanmar D 27 and D36 diesel outboard engines

Rhino Marine has secured a limited quantity of reconditioned Yanmar D27 and D36 diesel outboard engines.

These engines are only available on purchase of a Rhino craft.

We will work on a first paid, first serve principle to allocate the engines.

The outboard engines come with a 6 months fault-free warranty from date of invoice.
They look as good as new! Look at these pictures:

These outboard motors are not designed for speed but rather to do for heavy work:

  • pushing,
  • pulling,
  • carrying loads or
  • working long hours at low to mid range revs.

The fuel consumption is around 3L / 1 hour and the required service intervals is of about 200 hours. The D27 have spring assisted manual trim while the D36 have power trim.

Newsletter December 2015: Rhino Craft – cost effective SRP boats and daughter craft

Boskalis “Sjambok” 950 SRP Rhino – 4 years of service in West Africa

In 2011 SMIT Subsea (now Boskalis) commissioned Rhino to develop a new inboard diesel 950 as a daughter craft SRP for use in West Africa. The “Sjambok” has been based in Malabo (Equatorial Guinea) and has been operating in offshore Oil and Gas field works since then.

The “Sjambok” is powered by a Steyr Marine 295 HP Inboard diesel motor coupled to an Ultra Jet 305 jet-drive.

According to feedback from Boskalis the return on the financial investment for the Sjambok has been most satisfactory. Richard Penn, the Boskalis Project Manager for African Subsea Services, says that under prevailing West African conditions for both operation and storage it is important to have a work-horse that can be subjected to major abuse and despite this can still carry on working.

The Sjambok has done just that.

Rhino Marine are currently negotiating with Boskalis for developing a larger version sister craft for the Sjambok. What is currently being considered is a wider beam 1050 version that can be powered by twin diesels and jets.

Subsequent to the Sjambok development Rhino Marine have moved away from the Steyr inboard diesels in favour of the Yanmar 315 HP inboard diesels with the Ultra Jet 305 HT (High Torque) jet drive.

Smaller SRP Rhino Craft

The Rhino 600 outboards are used effectively by some operators as smaller SRP boats but generally the preferred smaller SRP Rhino Craft is the new style Rhino 750 fitted with Yanmar 240 HP inboard diesel motor and UJ 251 jet drive.

Currently Rhino Marine are building two new 750 Jet drive SRP’s for West African Ventures (WAV) in Nigeria and one Stern drive unit for Hyprops Nigeria.

Rhino “Wine Rack”

One of the features developed by Rhino Marine for the Boskalis “Sjambok” was the modular container system like a horizontal wine rack. It is fitted with five diving air bottles for SRP use that can be readily positioned on the SRP craft’s deck.
The box lid has an access window to allow easy access to the regulator valves on the end of each bottle. Each of the bottles is piped to a conveniently accessed distribution manifold on the one end corner of the box.

The concept is shown below:

Besides our 950 SRP boats there is an increasing demand for a cost effective larger SRP daughter craft that is fitted with a quick release launch and recovery mechanism, an air-conditioned cabin as well as being powered by twin diesels and jets to give a redundancy for offshore use.
Marsol Services, our partners in Dubai, are currently negotiating with potential clients in the UAE for such a craft and locally we are engaging with other operators in West Africa who are interested in this type of craft as well. The design of this craft is well advanced and the specifications for this craft are as follows:

  • Length bow to transom – 10.51 metres
  • Length bow to end of stern platform – 11.62 metres
  • Breadth – 3.26 metres
  • Propulsion – Twin Yanmar 315/440 HP + UJ305HT Jet
  • Quick Release LARS – Henriksen

The exciting new range Rhino Craft 750’s: Greater deck-space and pay-load within the width of Standard 12m containers for ease of transport

Recent sea trials of the Rhino 750 inboard stern drive diesel with a purchased by West African Trading Company of Italy for Tethys Plantgeria Ltd who are diving and marine contractors in Nigeria. As this craft will be used as a general work boat as well as a small diving craft it was necessary for us to develop a suitable propeller guard for the drive leg – see below.

Fabrication is now well under way in our factory in Cape Town for our prototype new-style 750 jet drive boat which has been ordered by Techno Dive SA in Uruguay.

This 750 is readily transported upright in a 12 metre container and replaces our earlier 690 jet drive model. It offers a lot more deck space and payload capacity than its predecessor.

Rhino Craft: Boats made for you.

A promising year 2015

Rhino 600

Rhino Craft are currently developing an exciting new range of workboats that gives maximum value, space and load carrying capacity. The picture above shows the prototype testing of the new Rhino 600.  This craft is replacing the Rhino 590 outboard range.

Lighter, faster and dryer, with a significantly increased deck-space and payload, at a base price of below € 15,000 this is an excellent workboat that retains the robustness for which Rhino have become famous.

Fabrication of the prototypes of our new Rhino 750 outboard range has already commenced – see more on this exciting new range in our March edition.

Rhino 590 HD and EHD side by side
Categories :boats, news

We are currently testing our first units of the new Mk2 range of the Rhino 590 which is the “original Rhino Craft” that is designed for transport inside a 6 m standard container.

With their new hull, we have added speed and manoeuvrability to a craft that already offered robustness.

We are pleased with their performance given that with a 55 HP outboard we can achieve 16 knots with three people aboard – plus they handle extremely well.

The other benefit that the Mk2 hulls have relative to the older Mk1 boats is the polystyrene foam filling of the sponsons and the filling of the hull cavity with closed cell foam – rendering the boat virtually unsinkable despite damage in the event of extreme abuse.

We believe that the cheaper 590 HD version (which has a list price of € 17,200 as opposed to € 22,500 for the 590 EHD) has a good place in the market despite not being a comparable personnel carrier for offshore bow catchers.
